On 20-21 May 2021, the first forum of Phase II of the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat presented practical steps towards the decarbonisation of EU islands and showcased ongoing and completed clean energy projects on islands.

 The event was a great success with around 270 participants and more than 50 speakers. Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, held an intriguing opening speech on the first day.

The EU Islands Facility NESOI, with the objective of facilitating the energy transition in islands, has confirmed support for 28 innovative clean energy projects which, combined, are expected to avoid around 300 kilotonnes  of CO2 per year and generate close to 1 billion euros in investments. 

Alessandra Montanelli from Sinloc presented NESOI at the webinar Climate change adaptation on European islands on the 29th of April.  

This webinar was organized by the Conama Foundation in the framework of the project “Insular Connection to facilitate Climate Change Adaptation” developed with the support of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge through the Biodiversity Foundation.

On March 24 2021 the Research for REGI Committee of the European Parliament published a report on "ISLANDS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION - State of play and future challanges. The study explores the specificities of islands and Outermost Regions of the EU as well as their challenges and existing means of development. This study includes an overview of policy responses for islands' challenges and proposes some recommendations.

The European Islands Facility NESOI, with the objective of facilitating the energy transition on islands, has completed the evaluation of its first call for applications: at least 28 project proposals out of the eligible 74 will receive funding and technical support to develop their islands energy projects.

The Member States of The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) met on the 25th of February to present the New Agenda for the Mediterranean adopted by the European Commission, which emphasised the EU's trust in the UfM's vital role in strengthening regional cooperation and as a privileged forum for dialogue for its 42 Member States.

In the coming years, the UfM will focus on the following areas: 

The European Commission launches the second phase of the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat. Over the next two years, the Secretariat will build on the results of Phase I to continue its support to energy transition of islands in the EU. The Secretariat will also match bottom-up initiatives with expert support leading to a pipeline of clean energy projects on the islands.
