The July edition of Open Access Government features the article “Energy Communities in Europe’s Outermost Regions: from Policy Experiment to Investment Reality”, authored by SINLOC, highlighting the role of renewable energy communities in accelerating the clean energy transition across Europe’s outermost regions.
The article explores how renewable energy communities (RECs) have evolved from policy-driven initiatives into increasingly viable investment opportunities. While the European regulatory framework has laid the foundations for their development, significant barriers remain, including fragmented demand, limited local capacity, financing challenges and the need for tailored technical assistance. Overcoming these obstacles requires integrated approaches that combine capacity building, financial engineering and stakeholder engagement.
Drawing on experiences from several European initiatives, the article showcases NESOIPlus as an example of how targeted support can help local authorities and communities transform promising ideas into mature investment projects. Through technical assistance and investment preparation, the project contributes to unlocking renewable energy investments in outermost regions such as the Canary Islands, Madeira, Martinique and the Azores.
