On 20-21 May 2021, the first forum of Phase II of the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat presented practical steps towards the decarbonisation of EU islands and showcased ongoing and completed clean energy projects on islands.
The event was a great success with around 270 participants and more than 50 speakers. Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, held an intriguing opening speech on the first day.
The two-day event acted as a knowledge hub for the clean energy transition of European islands. It provided participants with a platform to gain visibility for their initiatives, to get technical assistance for designing, preparing, and implementing their decarbonisation plans and to get assistance on project funding.
The forum presented a variety of formats such as high-level political panel discussions, workshops, an exhibition area, and networking/matchmaking opportunities. Moreover, the results of the secretariat’s first call for technical assistance as well as a preview the results of NESOI's first open call were announced during the event.
The forum was an opportunity to meet representatives from EU islands, academic institutions, private sector stakeholders and high-level EU-representatives and to get to know about the objectives of Phase II of the Clean energy for EU islands initiative, including the Explore, Shape and Act approach.
