CPMR ISLANDS COMMISSION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (12-13 May 2022)

Andrea Martinez, our project coordinator and partner from Sinloc, moderated the Roundtable dedicated to "Environmental Dimension: Energy Transition and Climate Change" at the Island Commission of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe. This organisation covers 19 island authorities in the Mediterranean and Baltic seas and Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, which means an estimated population of 15 million inhabitants. The General Assembly takes place once a year, where each region holds a vote for political and budgetary matters. However, the main aim of the Island Commission is to foster synergies among the islands, which would improve their conditions and cohesion.

The session moderated by Mr Martinez provided a space for different stakeholders representing islands to share their energy transition and climate adaptation best practices and examples of innovative solutions taking into account the particularities of the insularity context. The participants from this rountable were:

  • FIlip Reinhag, Deputy Mayor of the opposition from the region of Gotland (Sweden)
  • José Sánchez Ruano, Delegate of the Government of the Canary Islands in Brussels
  • Juliana Espinosa-Lopez, STEPSol International Development Officer, Corsican start-up developing an innovative energy storage technology
  • Christel Liljegren, FEDARENE Vice-President for Mobility and Transport, CEO of the Energy for Southeast Sweden
