T.W.E.E.T.S - solving The Water EmergEncy on The island of Salina

COUNTRY: ITALY
ISLAND: SALINA
PROJECT PROMOTERS: ASSEMBLEA TERRITORIALE IDRICA DI MESSINA
SECTOR: WATER MANAGEMENT
PROJECT VALUE: 7,900,000 €

WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?

  • The project studies the realization of one or more desalination plants on the island, replacing the current supply of drinking water by tank ships from the mainland.
  • The corresponding energy need will be covered thanks to the installation of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the public buildings of the island’s municipalities.
  • A further contribution will be represented by a system of microturbines to be set along the water network, for the energy exploitation of existing drops along the pipes and between the tanks..
  • he implementation of the project will allow to make the island of Salina no longer dependent on the transport of water by tank ships, often linked to the conditions of the sea.

HOW WILL THE EU ISLANDS FACILICY NESOI SUPPORT THE PROJECT?

  • Survey of the existing water and electricity networks
  • Identification of desalination plants’ areas
  • Bathymetry survey of brine discharge points
  • Feasibility study of the intervention in the selected areas
  • Analysis of the desalination water needs for each municipality
  • Study of electrical loads on the island
  • Study of the most suitable desalination system and of the energy recovery system using microturbines
  • Analysis of authorization procedures
  • Cost-benefit analysis and risk analysis of the chosen solution
  • Study of possible sources of financing and the most suitable financial models
